Handoff lets you move between your Apple devices without searching for what you were looking at. Open a guest on your iPhone, then continue on your Mac or iPad: Aprox opens the same guest on the same tab, for example the Snapshots tab of windows-lab. Handoff is free.

Where to find it

Handoff works in the background whenever you have something open in the detail pane. You pick it up on the other device:

  • Mac: the Aprox icon with a Handoff badge at the end of the Dock (or in the ⌘-Tab app switcher).
  • iPad: the Aprox icon at the end of the Dock, or the banner in the App Switcher.
  • iPhone: the banner at the bottom of the App Switcher.

Continue on another device

  1. On the first device, open a guest in Aprox, for example plex on "Homelab (Demo)", and switch to the tab you want, for example Hardware.
  2. On the second device, open the Handoff item for Aprox:
    • Mac: click the Aprox icon with the Handoff badge in the Dock.
    • iPad or iPhone: open the App Switcher and tap the Aprox banner at the bottom.
  3. Aprox opens on the second device with the same guest and the same tab. If needed, it signs in to the server first.

When you switch tabs on the first device, Handoff follows: the other device opens the tab that is on screen now, not the one you started on. The same works for nodes and storages you have open.

Requirements

  • Both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • Handoff is turned on in the system settings of both devices:
    • iPhone and iPad: Settings › General › AirPlay & Continuity › Handoff.
    • Mac: System Settings › General › AirDrop & Handoff › Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, and the devices are near each other.
  • The same server is added in Aprox on both devices. Servers are not synced between devices, so add it on each one.

Note

Handoff passes only which server, guest and tab you had open, never passwords or tokens. The second device connects with its own saved credentials. If it does not have the server, nothing happens.

Good to know

  • If the server on the second device needs a password or a two-factor code that is not saved, sign in there first.
  • If a tab does not exist on the second device, Aprox opens the Summary tab instead. For example, the Mac shows the console in its own window rather than as a tab.
  • Handoff is not available on Android or on the watch apps.
