Aprox manages Proxmox Backup Server as well as Proxmox VE. You add a Backup Server the same way as a Proxmox VE server, with a different type and port. Once signed in, you can browse its datastores and backups, follow its tasks, and manage jobs, remotes, users and permissions. Adding and browsing are free.

Where to find it

  • Sidebar toolbar › Add Server (+).
  • In an empty sidebar: Add Server.
  • On a Mac, or an iPad with a keyboard: press ⌘N, or choose File › Add Server….

Add the Backup Server

  1. Open Add Server.
  2. Under General, set Type to Backup Server. The port changes to 8007.
  3. Optional: enter a Name (optional) for the sidebar, for example Backup Vault. Without a name, the sidebar shows host:port.
  4. Enter the Host: a host name or IP address. You can paste a full address such as https://pbs.example.com:8007. Aprox trims it to the host and moves the port into Port when you leave the field.
  5. Check the Port. The default for Proxmox Backup Server is 8007.
  6. Under Authentication, choose the Method: Password or API Token.
  7. Choose the Realm. Tap Refresh realms from server to load the server's realms. Until you do, the list offers pam and pbs. If the server's certificate is not trusted yet, the certificate prompt appears here. See Self-signed certificates.
  8. Enter the Username without the realm, for example root.
  9. Enter the credentials:
    • Password: optionally enter the Password and turn on Save password to Keychain.
    • API Token: enter the Token name and the Token secret. The Token ID shows the full ID, for example root@pam!aprox.
  10. Leave Skip TLS validation off.
  11. Tap Save.
  12. Tap the server in the sidebar and sign in, as described in Add a Proxmox VE server.

API tokens on a Backup Server

Create the token in the Proxmox Backup Server web interface under Configuration › Access Control › API Token. The secret is shown only once.

In Aprox, enter only the secret in Token secret. Aprox joins it to the token ID the way Backup Server expects, which differs from Proxmox VE. A new token has no permissions of its own; give it some under Access Control › Permissions before you sign in. See Create an API token.

What you see after signing in

When you expand a signed-in Backup Server in the sidebar, it shows:

  • Overview: datastore usage, garbage collection state, server health and history charts;
  • Datastores: one row per datastore, marked Needs attention when something is wrong;
  • Tasks;
  • Remotes;
  • Access Control;
  • System.

See Backup Server overview for a tour.

Good to know

  • Sign-in, two-factor, certificates and alerts work for a Backup Server exactly as for Proxmox VE.
  • A Backup Server also appears on the All Clusters dashboard, as "Backup Server · N datastores".
  • Viewing everything is free. Changes such as garbage collection, verify, prune, job and user management need Aprox Pro.
