Instead of downloading a large ISO image to your device and uploading it again, you can hand the address to Proxmox. The node fetches the file itself and writes it to the storage, so it never passes through your phone, tablet or Mac. This is usually much faster than an upload and works even on a slow mobile connection. Downloading from a URL needs Aprox Pro.

Where to find it

  1. Sidebar › your server › storage (for example local) › Content.
  2. Choose ISO or Templates.
  3. Tap Download in the toolbar.
    • Android: tap the Download from URL chip under the type picker.
    • If the list is empty, the empty state offers the same button (Download for ISO, Download from URL for templates).

Download a file

  1. Open the Download to Storage sheet as described above.
  2. Under Source URL, paste the address of the file, for example the download link of a Debian or Ubuntu ISO image.
  3. Under Destination, check the Filename (Android: File name). Aprox fills it in from the last part of the URL; change it if the address does not end in a useful name.
  4. Check Storage and Type. Both come from where you started: the storage you are on, and iso or vztmpl (container template) depending on the list you opened.
  5. Under Verification, decide how the node should check the file (see below).
  6. Tap Start. The sheet closes and the download continues on the node.

The new file appears in the Content list once the node has finished. You can follow the download like any other task in the node's or the cluster's task list.

Verification options

Option What it does
Verify TLS certificates On by default. The node checks the certificate of the download server. Turn it off only for a source you already trust, for example an internal server with a self-signed certificate.
Checksum Optional. Paste the checksum the publisher lists for the file.
Algorithm The algorithm of that checksum: None, md5, sha1, sha224, sha256, sha384 or sha512.

When you enter a checksum, the node verifies the file after it arrives and discards it if the sum does not match.

Tip

Most distributions publish SHA-256 sums next to their ISO images. Pasting the sum and choosing sha256 protects you against a broken or tampered download.

Requirements on the server

  • The node needs internet access (or access to the server in the URL).
  • Your account needs storage rights, typically Datastore.AllocateTemplate on the storage, plus Sys.Audit and Sys.Modify on the node.
  • If a right is missing, Aprox names the path and the privilege it needs.

Good to know

  • Only ISO images and container templates can be downloaded this way. That is a Proxmox limit.
  • The download is not available in the demo.
  • For container templates from Proxmox's own index, the appliance catalog is easier: you pick a template from a list instead of looking up its address.
